On the Eve of 2007

Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. ~Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1850

I still think going out on New Year's Eve is lame, so if you can't make it to Times Square, I recommend curling up with someone and watching it on TV.
~Anderson Cooper

New Year's Eve can do strange things to people. It's like in the final scene of the movie "When Harry Met Sally." Harry hunts down Sally at a New Year's Eve party and tells her he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. Sally doesn't bite - at first.

"I'm sorry Harry," she says. "I know it's New Years Eve, I know you're feeling lonely, but you just can't show up here, tell me you love me and expect that to make everything all right. It doesn't work this way."

For most people, New Year's Eve does work this way. It's a chance to clean the slate, start fresh and do the things you've always wanted to do. Harry pleads it's not because it's New Year's Eve, but because: "when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of the life to start as soon as possible," he says.

I believed Harry loved Sally, but I can't help but think it was New Year's Eve that gave him the final push. It's a holiday notorious for producing high expectations and delivering big disappointments. But nonetheless every year, with optimism by our side, we don a party hat, clink champagne glasses and vow through resolutions to do things differently in the year to come. For Harry, it was to live not a day more without the love of his life.

And like some of you, my expectations for this evening are high. I'm spending the evening with someone I didn't expect to spend another holiday with ever again. I'm hoping that he will be possessed by Harry's spirit and make a declaration of his undying love for me. If you listen closely you can hear the soundtrack music in the background, but as I pull my head out of the clouds, I will undoubtedly wake-up with the realism that it was one perfect evening and that there is nothing that can't be fixed with good hard run and a dose of reality as real versus reel life comes back into focus.

Everyone has their own way of celebrating, how will you be ringing in the New Year?

Thanks to Cassie Pence for the perfect inspiration. And thanks to an Anderfan for the photos!

@Jade: You really have a point there regarding the "Harry Met Sally" phenomenon. I've always looked at NYE celebrations as just an excuse for a drunkfest! Never really took making New Year's resolutions or "whom" I spent NYE with as a serious thing. I also think alcohol will have a BIG effect on how the evening progresses tonight for a lot of people so when you mentioned that NYE gave Harry a push...my question would have been or was it the alcohol he consumed???? One will never know will they? Good Luck and best wishes for you tonight...

As for me...I'm refraining from the drunkfest this year! I'm going to enjoy the next few days for some relaxation and to get some personal things done before I jump back into the "zoo" which is my career and work!!!

P.S. I also might try my hand at actually making a new year's resolution for next year....I'll put it on my "to do" list....yeah right.

Bad weather is traditional where I live so I usually stay home. This year it's raining here, but I'm still staying home, that's my tradition and I'm sticking to it. But tomorrow is a new year and U of M is in the Rose Bowl(tradition again)

@jr...generally my NY resolution is that I don't make any resolutions...lol. I hope you enjoy your evening!

@anon...I love watching the parade on NY's morning. That was always part of our family tradition...followed by a shrimp boil. Which is still on for tomorrow. Hope your Wolverines can get the better of those Trojans!

@Jade: I totally enjoyed my evening and I actually stayed awake during the ball drop! Don't know if you got to watch NYE w/AC but it looks like the "Ann" phenomenon is back!

Oh yeah...Betty Ann sent in a pic and it was broadcasted....

Quietly leaving room to go vomit!!!!

@JR...Crap! I totally missed the Betty Ann picture. We tuned in for the last 45 minutes or so...

Maybe it's a running joke with the "360" people as well? I sure as hell hope so...

lol

Oh and one more thing...

I remembered over the weekend, after talking about Harry and Sally, that Steven Ford, the late president's son, was the one who broke Sally's heart! He played Joe...

Talk about "360"...

@Jade: I didn't realize that Joe was Steven Ford in the movie....isn't it funny how things interrelate?

Sorry you missed the Betty Ann pic. It was a classic. She was posing on the floor with a glass of wine and with 3 dogs wearing Happy New Year gear! It was the first pic they broadcasted live after Anderson asked the viewers to send in their pics and videos. CNN.com has posted some of the pics from the show and fortunately, they skipped the Betty Ann photo! Thank God!!!

@JR...Dear Lord, was she secretly trying to entice Mr. Cooper with her pose? LOL...

Ok, something's DEFINITELY up with the Anns and 360. I do hope it's just a running joke, because it's getting weird. BA was the FIRST pic shown? Dang!

@Anon: It seems like the "Anns" are always first doesn't it? Either they are extremely persistent or they have some type of connection with 360.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if one of them wins the AC360 contest!

Those "Anns" certainly belong in the "highly motivated" Anderfan category that AC sarcastically spoke about to Larry King a while back.

I'm just glad that CNN didn't post the pic of Betty Ann. I don't know if I could have restrained myself. On the other hand, what fun is there in being good?!?
